Dresden's main station is about 476 kilometres from Frankfurt Airport, a drive of just under five hours. From Wiener Platz the car works its way out of the city onto the A 4, the main axis across Saxony and Thuringia.

Past Chemnitz, Erfurt and Gotha the route holds the A 4 as far as Kirchheim, then transfers to the A 7 and the A 5 heading south. The stretches through the Thuringian Forest are the twistiest and, in winter weather, the slowest part of the trip.

The main station on Wiener Platz closes the southern end of Prager Straße, and its platforms sit under a translucent membrane roof that gave the historic structure an entirely new quality of light during its restoration.

From here it is a few minutes on foot into the old town with the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Semperoper and the Brühl Terrace above the Elbe. North lies the Neustadt with its nightlife, north-west Radebeul with its vineyards, and south Freital and Bannewitz as the approach to the Ore Mountains.

Around the Striezelmarkt in December and during major events the forecourt is heavily used, so we agree a pickup point slightly off the square.
