Frankfurt Airport taxi — or a fixed-price transfer?
Looking for an airport taxi in Frankfurt gives you three options: a taxi from the rank with the meter running, the city's fixed-fare taxi for pre-ordered rides — and a privately booked transfer. We are the third. This is a licensed private-hire operation with a driver, not a taxi: the price is set before you travel, the driver waits with a name sign, and 60 minutes are included from the actual landing time.
How it works
- 01 Enter the journey
Address and time — the price for each vehicle class appears immediately, not at the destination.
- 02 No queue at the rank
Your driver waits on the arrivals level at T1 or T3 with your name on a sign.
- 03 A fixed amount
Traffic, diversions and a slow baggage belt do not change the agreed price.
Taxi rank, fixed-fare taxi or pre-booked transfer
Since Frankfurt reformed its taxi tariff in December 2024, the meter is no longer the only option. Three systems now sit side by side, and they differ less in the vehicle than in when the price is settled and how far they will go.
| Option | Price known | Waiting at the airport | Outside the mandatory zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi from the rank | Only when you get out | In the queue — ten to twenty minutes at peak times | Acceptance optional, price freely negotiable |
| Fixed-fare taxi (city tariff) | When you order by phone or app | Depends on dispatch | Bound to the city's per-kilometre corridor |
| Pre-booked transfer | Before you book, for each vehicle class | Driver waiting with a name sign | Every address at the same fixed-price principle |
What you are booking — and why it is not a taxi
This is a licensed private-hire operation under Germany's Passenger Transport Act (PBefG). That is not a quibble over words: it is a different licence class from a taxi, and it explains almost every practical difference. A private-hire car with driver may only accept journeys that reached the operator's premises in advance. It may not wait at a taxi rank, may not be hailed in the street, and does not bill through a meter — it bills the price agreed beforehand.
Two things follow for you. First, we cannot do spontaneous rides: if you are standing in arrivals and want to leave right now, the taxi rank is the right answer. Second, everything agreed in advance is therefore binding. The price does not move because of traffic, a diversion or a long queue at passport control, because it never depended on time spent on board.
The journey is commercially insured, the drivers hold a passenger-transport licence, and the invoice shows VAT separately. So if you searched for an “airport taxi” and landed here, you are not getting something lesser than a taxi — you are getting something different: the same journey, with the price settled beforehand and a driver expecting you by name.
Where the taxis are — and where your driver waits
Since Terminal 3 opened in April 2026, Frankfurt Airport operates two passenger terminals. Taxis wait on the arrivals level at both, signposted directly outside baggage reclaim, with Terminal 3 having its own forecourt at the entrance. Travelling spontaneously means joining that queue — which at peak times and during major events can easily take ten to twenty minutes.
A pre-booked journey skips that step. The meeting point is the arrivals level of your terminal, immediately beyond that concourse's customs exit: concourses A, B, C or Z in Terminal 1, concourse H or J in Terminal 3. Which one applies follows from your flight number, so you do not have to work it out. 60 minutes of waiting are included from the actual landing.
If you land at the wrong terminal or the gate changes at short notice, it does not matter: Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are linked by the free SkyLine train, and the driver moves to the new meeting point at no extra charge.
Meter, fixed-fare taxi, fixed-price transfer
With a classic meter the fare builds from a base charge, a running per-kilometre rate and a separate waiting-time rate whenever the vehicle is stationary — in traffic on the A5, for example. Frankfurt has two quirks many travellers do not know about: there is no night surcharge and no supplement for luggage or animals. So the notorious four-in-the-morning fare is not expensive because of the hour; it is expensive because the journey was long.
Since the December 2024 tariff reform, Frankfurt taxi operators may also offer a fixed fare for rides ordered in advance by phone or app — not for street hails. That fixed fare is not a free-market price: it has to sit inside a per-kilometre corridor set by the city. In exchange the separate base charge falls away, and you can still insist on the meter instead.
A privately booked transfer, by contrast, prices the whole journey as one, independent of the city corridor, and includes things a taxi tariff cannot express at all: the chosen vehicle class, a waiting window after landing, and active flight tracking.

When the taxi rank is the better answer
For short, unplanned journeys the classic taxi is hard to beat. If you need to get to the airport with no notice, if you are coming from Sachsenhausen, Nordend or Offenbach, and if a quarter of an hour either way does not matter, a taxi from the rank saves you all the planning. Inside the mandatory acceptance zone, no Frankfurt taxi may refuse a fare, so spontaneous trips essentially always work.
That zone reaches Friedberg in the Wetterau to the north, Hanau to the east, the Riedstadt districts of Goddelau and Erfelden to the south, and Wiesbaden to the west. Within it, the taxi network offers a density and reliability no pre-booking service can match on short notice.
We say so plainly, because the alternative — selling a transfer to everybody who searches — is worse for both sides. A transfer earns its place where predictability is worth something. Where it is not, take the taxi.
When booking ahead genuinely pays
Five situations come up again and again, and in all five a pre-booked transfer is not more comfortable — it is simply more reliable.
In each case you are not paying for luxury; you are paying for one variable to disappear. The price is settled beforehand, so is the meeting point, and for arrivals the pickup follows the real landing rather than the timetable.
- Very early departures
- Before six in the morning local transport either does not run or runs on a night timetable, and fewer cars wait at the rank. A fixed pickup at your own address replaces hoping.
- Delayed or rescheduled flights
- The pickup follows the actual landing time rather than the hour you booked — with no call and no rebooking.
- Heavy or oversized luggage
- The vehicle class is settled in advance. At the rank you get whichever car is at the front.
- Destinations outside the mandatory zone
- For Mainz, Darmstadt, the Rheingau or anywhere further, a taxi may refuse the fare or price it freely. A transfer serves any address at the price agreed beforehand.
- Business trips with expenses
- An amount fixed before the trip can be approved and coded — on account if you prefer, with VAT shown separately.
Instead of a large-capacity taxi: a van class with stated capacity
Finding a large-capacity taxi at Frankfurt Airport is a matter of luck — whether one happens to be at the front of the rank when six people arrive with luggage is pure chance. Booking ahead replaces luck with capacity: the largest class in our fleet takes 8 passengers and 12 suitcases, and those are the same figures the booking system dispatches against.
That is the difference between a category and a commitment. You are not booking a vehicle size that might work; you are booking a capacity that was calculated. If one vehicle is not enough, two are set to the same pickup time and meeting point — with one combined fixed price and a single invoice.
In practice it is nearly always the luggage that decides rather than the headcount. Six travellers with hand luggage fit comfortably into one vehicle; six travellers with two large cases each do not. That is why the form asks for both.
From Frankfurt Airport into the region — where a taxi runs out of road
Most airport-taxi searches do not end in Frankfurt. Heidelberg, Mannheim, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Darmstadt, the Bergstraße, the Rheingau, Würzburg — these destinations lie wholly or partly outside Frankfurt's mandatory acceptance zone. Out there the duty to accept a fare no longer applies: an operator may take the job, refuse it, or price it individually. What travellers experience is a price range nobody can explain to them.
A pre-booked transfer does not know that boundary. The route is priced as a whole — kilometres, vehicle class, tolls and road charges included — and the price is settled before you book, whether the destination is twelve or two hundred kilometres away. Each city has its own page with a real distance and drive time rather than an estimate.
Cross-border journeys work on the same principle: France, Switzerland, Austria, the Benelux countries and other neighbours are served at a fixed price with tolls and vignettes accounted for. A taxi from the rank would, as a rule, simply decline such a trip.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Frankfurt Airport?
With a meter the amount only emerges during the ride, from the base charge, the per-kilometre rate and waiting-time charges, which is why traffic and diversions push it up. With a pre-booked transfer the price is fixed before you book and depends only on distance and vehicle class — tolls, airport charges and the agreed waiting time included.
Is FR Transfer a taxi company?
We operate as a licensed private-hire company with drivers under Germany's Passenger Transport Act, which is a different licence class from a taxi. In practice that means journeys have to be booked in advance, there is no meter and no waiting at the rank — and the price is settled before you travel.
Do I have to queue at the taxi rank at Frankfurt Airport?
A pre-booked journey removes the queue: your driver waits with a name sign on the arrivals level beyond your concourse's customs exit. At the rank itself the wait can run to ten or twenty minutes at peak times and during major events.
Can you get a fixed-fare taxi in Frankfurt?
Since the December 2024 tariff reform, Frankfurt taxi operators may offer a fixed fare for rides ordered in advance by phone or app, and that fare must sit inside a per-kilometre corridor set by the city. Rides hailed in the street stay on the meter.
Will a taxi take me from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg or Mannheim?
Outside the mandatory acceptance zone — which reaches Wiesbaden in the west, Hanau in the east, Friedberg in the north and Riedstadt in the south — there is no duty to accept a fare, so a taxi may refuse the trip or price it freely. A pre-booked transfer covers these routes at a price agreed in advance, with a dedicated page for each city.
Can I get an invoice for a business trip?
Invoicing is available on request, with VAT shown separately and the details an expense claim needs. Because the amount is settled before the trip, it can be approved in advance or coded to a project.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
The pickup follows the actual landing time rather than the hour you booked: the driver tracks the flight by its number and shifts the meeting point automatically. 60 minutes of waiting are included from the real landing.
