From Ehrenbreitstein Fortress to Frankfurt Airport

From Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, high above the right bank of the Rhine, it is about 112 kilometres to Frankfurt Airport, a drive of roughly 77 minutes. The car first descends from the fortress rock to the valley floor and joins the A 48 heading east out of the Rhine gorge.

At the Dernbach interchange the A 3 takes over, crossing the Westerwald and passing Limburg an der Lahn on the way to Frankfurt. It is motorway the whole way, but the scenery changes sharply: narrow river valley, then open upland, then the Rhine-Main plain.

Pickup at the fortress

We collect you where you actually are – the visitor car park on the plateau, the upper cable-car station, the youth hostel inside the fortress grounds, or your accommodation down in the Ehrenbreitstein district beneath the rock.

Because the approach road is a steep series of hairpins, we agree the exact meeting point in advance. The price is fixed at booking whether we load up on the plateau or by the riverbank below.

Arriving at the terminal

At Frankfurt Airport we pull up at the kerbside of Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, depending on your airline, so the trip from the Rhine ends at check-in without a single change.

Allow roughly three hours before a long-haul departure and two before a European one. Since departure time and terminal are agreed beforehand, there is no arithmetic with train connections or shuttle buses.

About Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Ehrenbreitstein is one of the largest surviving fortresses in Europe, standing a good hundred metres above the Rhine directly opposite the Deutsches Eck. The complex you see today is Prussian, built in the early 19th century on a rock that had been fortified since the Middle Ages.

It now houses the Landesmuseum Koblenz, exhibition spaces and a youth hostel, and the cable car built for the 2011 Federal Garden Show has become the favourite way up. The plateau lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley and offers the widest view over the point where the Moselle joins the Rhine.

Practical notes for this route

If you are heading straight to a flight after a visit, remember the cable car runs to fixed hours – for very early departures, a pickup down in Ehrenbreitstein is the more reliable arrangement.

Autumn mornings in the Rhine valley often bring fog that slows the first few kilometres, so we build the buffer into that section rather than into the motorway. Mention bulky luggage or camera equipment when booking.

Comparison

Transfer, taxi or train from Festung Ehrenbreitstein?

A taxi from the fortress would run 112 kilometres on the meter with an open-ended total, whereas this transfer fixes the fare before you set off. The train assumes you first get down to the valley, across the Rhine to Koblenz Hauptbahnhof, onto a long-distance service and then through the airport station with your bags. A rental car is a liability on the hairpin approach and in the tight streets of Ehrenbreitstein, and it still has to be returned and paid for at the airport.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur is booked to the minute in Festung Ehrenbreitstein. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Festung Ehrenbreitstein.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the agreed pickup time. After that a cancellation fee may apply; at the pickup address in Festung Ehrenbreitstein 15 minutes of waiting are included, and each further quarter hour is charged at the rate stated in the terms.
