Route facts

From Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg Castle

The terminal and the Schlossberg are 89 kilometres and about 68 minutes apart. The drive uses the A 5 southbound almost the whole way, past Darmstadt and along the Bergstrasse near Weinheim.

Only the final stage gets intricate: through Heidelberg, past the Karlstor and up the castle hill in tight bends. If you prefer to finish on foot, we drop you at the Kornmarkt and you ride the funicular up.

Meet and greet in arrivals

Your driver waits with a name sign in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. We see the flight number, so a delayed landing moves the meeting time automatically and you do not need to call.

From there it is straight to the car, with no ticket to buy and no change at the long-distance station. After an overnight flight that is the difference between arriving and still travelling.

Arriving at the castle

We drive up to the castle car park on the Neue Schlossstrasse, a few steps from the gatehouse. Alternatively we set you down at your old-town hotel or at the Kornmarkt if you want to take the funicular.

The castle keeps fixed opening hours, and the courtyard is noticeably calmer once the first coach groups have moved on. Tell us the arrival time you want and we plan the drive around it.

What waits at the top

The castle stands some eighty metres above the Neckar, and the view alone from the Altan terrace over the Old Bridge and the old town justifies the climb. Red Neckar valley sandstone gives the ruin its unmistakable colour.

Highlights include the Ottheinrich building, one of the earliest Renaissance works north of the Alps, the Great Vat in the cellar and the German Pharmacy Museum. The terraced gardens were once laid out as the Hortus Palatinus.

Practical notes for this trip

The courtyard is cobbled and uneven, which makes wheeled cases awkward. If you are coming straight from the airport, it is worth dropping the luggage at your hotel first, and we are happy to make that short stop.

In summer and around the castle illuminations the access road is closed at times. Let us know at booking if you arrive on an event day and we plan an alternative drop-off in the old town.

Comparison

Transfer, taxi or train from Heidelberger Schloss?

The rail version is an S-Bahn or ICE to Mannheim, onward to Heidelberg main station, a bus or tram into the old town and finally the funicular to the castle, three or four changes with suitcases. A taxi from Frankfurt covers the distance with no fixed final price. A rental car adds a drive immediately after landing plus the hunt for a space on the Schlossberg, where parking is tight. The fixed-price transfer takes you in one journey from the name sign in arrivals to the gatehouse, at a price agreed in advance.

Timing

When to set off from Heidelberger Schloss

For the 89 km to Frankfurt your driver allows around 68 minutes of actual driving plus roughly 15 minutes of buffer for rush hour, roadworks and the terminal approach. To make a Schengen flight, that means leaving Heidelberger Schloss about 3 h 23 min before departure; for long-haul and non-Schengen, about 4 h 23 min.

You do not have to do that arithmetic yourself. Enter your departure time and address and the booking form proposes the pickup time — driving time, buffer and terminal lead are already inside it. If you would rather leave earlier, overwrite the suggestion.

In the other direction the arithmetic disappears anyway: for an airport pickup the time hangs on your flight number, not the clock. Your driver tracks the actual landing, and 60 minutes of waiting from touchdown are included.

What's included

What the price covers on this route

The fixed price for Heidelberger Schloss – Frankfurt Airport covers all 89 km, plus tolls and road charges en route, the airport access and short-stay parking at pickup. What you pay is settled before you book — there is no meter and no surcharge that only appears as you get out.

The price is independent of the clock as well. The same route costs the same at three in the morning as on a Wednesday afternoon, the same on public holidays as on working days, and there is no demand surcharge during trade fairs. The only things that move it are ones you choose: a stop along the way, a larger vehicle class, or the return leg.

Every passenger is welcome — regardless of background, gender, identity or orientation; our drivers are explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly. Pets travel when the species and size are noted at booking, and guide and assistance dogs with no notice and no surcharge.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberger Schloss take?

The drive from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberger Schloss takes about 68 minutes for 89 km in normal traffic. That is measured from the meeting point inside the terminal, not from touchdown.

Where does my driver meet me at Terminal 1 or 3?

The meeting point is the arrivals hall of your terminal — your driver stands just beyond the customs exit holding a name sign and walks you to the vehicle. The terminal follows from the flight number you give when booking, and a diversion to 1 or 3 still gets you found.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickup is linked to your flight number and shifts automatically with the actual landing time — at no extra charge. 60 minutes of waiting are included after touchdown so baggage reclaim and passport control are covered.

How much is a transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberger Schloss?

The fixed price for the 89 km route is shown in the booking form before you book and never changes afterwards — regardless of traffic, time of day, weekday or how long the drive actually takes. It depends on the vehicle class and the distance, not on a meter.

What does the fixed price include?

It covers the 89 km drive, tolls and road charges en route, airport fees, and 60 minutes of waiting from the landing time. The price only moves for things you choose yourself — a stop along the way, a larger vehicle class or a return leg — and each is shown in the form before you confirm.

Does the ride cost more at night or on public holidays?

The fixed price applies whatever the clock says: Heidelberger Schloss – Frankfurt Airport costs the same at three in the morning as on a Wednesday afternoon. There is no night, weekend or holiday surcharge, and no demand pricing during trade fairs. Booking and driving run 24/7.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

The sedan classes take 4 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags; the Business Van takes 12 suitcases plus 5 cabin bags for up to 8 passengers. Declare oversized items such as skis, a golf bag or a pushchair when booking so the right class is dispatched.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur waits for you at the terminal with a name sign. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Heidelberger Schloss.

Transfer or train from Heidelberger Schloss?

The train is cheaper per person, the transfer per vehicle — with two travellers and luggage the comparison usually flips. The transfer covers the 89 km in about 68 minutes with no changes and ends at your address rather than a station; travelling alone with hand luggage and a good connection, the train is often the better call.

Can I travel with a dog or a cat?

Pets are welcome. State the species and size when booking so the right vehicle class is dispatched for Heidelberger Schloss — small animals travel in a carrier in the footwell, larger dogs in the load area of a van. Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel in every vehicle, with no advance notice and no surcharge.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.

Can I book this transfer for someone else?

The booking runs in the passenger's name rather than the payer's — your guest, client or family member is met at the terminal with a name sign. Payment and the receipt stay with you. Add the passenger's flight number and mobile so flight tracking and contact both work.

Who is the service for?

Every passenger is welcome — regardless of background, gender, identity or orientation. Our drivers are explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly: couples, families of every shape, women travelling alone and guests who need assistance are driven with exactly the same matter-of-factness as anyone else. Discretion is part of a chauffeur service in any case.
