The terminal and the Schlossberg are 89 kilometres and about 68 minutes apart. The drive uses the A 5 southbound almost the whole way, past Darmstadt and along the Bergstrasse near Weinheim.

Only the final stage gets intricate: through Heidelberg, past the Karlstor and up the castle hill in tight bends. If you prefer to finish on foot, we drop you at the Kornmarkt and you ride the funicular up.

What waits at the top

The castle stands some eighty metres above the Neckar, and the view alone from the Altan terrace over the Old Bridge and the old town justifies the climb. Red Neckar valley sandstone gives the ruin its unmistakable colour.

Highlights include the Ottheinrich building, one of the earliest Renaissance works north of the Alps, the Great Vat in the cellar and the German Pharmacy Museum. The terraced gardens were once laid out as the Hortus Palatinus.

Practical notes for this trip

The courtyard is cobbled and uneven, which makes wheeled cases awkward. If you are coming straight from the airport, it is worth dropping the luggage at your hotel first, and we are happy to make that short stop.
