Route facts

From Leipzig Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt Airport

Leipzig main station to Frankfurt Airport is about 401 kilometres, a drive of roughly four hours and 20 minutes. The route leaves the Leipzig area on the A9 and A38, follows the A4 past Erfurt and Eisenach, then runs down the A5 through northern and central Hesse to the airport.

The Thuringian stretch of the A4 climbs through the Hörselberg area and is the demanding part in winter conditions. For that reason we allow noticeably more buffer between December and March than in the summer months.

Pickup at the main station

We collect you at the station itself, normally on Willy-Brandt-Platz in front of the main hall, or on the eastern side if that suits your exit better. The meeting point is confirmed before the journey.

If you are arriving on a regional train from Halle, Taucha or Markkleeberg, this is where you step out of the rail system for good. The driver takes your luggage at the kerb.

Arriving at the departure terminal

In Frankfurt we stop on the departures level at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, whichever your airline uses. From there you walk straight to check-in, with no terminal change and no shuttle.

With over four hours of driving, we aim to arrive about three hours before a long-haul departure and roughly two before a European one, then work the Leipzig start time backwards from that.

Leipzig Hauptbahnhof as a starting point

Measured by floor area, Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is the largest terminus station in Europe, and it doubles as a shopping centre: the Promenaden arcades beneath the historic concourse hold well over a hundred shops. As a meeting point, it is impossible to miss.

It is the transport hub for all of western Saxony, with services from Halle, Chemnitz and Dresden plus the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland network. Augustusplatz with the Gewandhaus and opera house, and the city centre with the Thomaskirche and Nikolaikirche, are all within walking distance.

Tips for this route

If your Frankfurt flight leaves very early, the Leipzig pickup falls in the middle of the night. Many travellers prefer the first afternoon departure instead and start at a civilised hour.

During the spring book fair and other major events, cars out of Leipzig are in heavy demand. Booking early secures both the right vehicle and your preferred pickup time.

Comparison

Transfer, taxi or train from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof?

The ICE from Leipzig to Frankfurt's long-distance station is quick, but you carry your own bags through the concourse, budget for the walk to the terminal at the far end, and absorb any delay yourself. A metered taxi across 401 kilometres charges by distance and time, and a rental car adds a one-way fee plus airport parking. The fixed-price transfer waits at Willy-Brandt-Platz, runs without a change via the A38, A4 and A5 to the departures kerb, and holds its price even when the A4 in Thuringia is slow that day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt Airport take?

The drive from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt Airport takes about 258 minutes for 401 km in normal traffic. Your driver adds roughly 50 minutes of buffer for rush hour and roadworks.

How early should I leave Leipzig Hauptbahnhof for Frankfurt Airport?

Leave Leipzig Hauptbahnhof about 7 h 8 min before departure for a Schengen flight, or about 8 h 8 min for long-haul. That is 258 minutes of driving, 50 minutes of traffic buffer and 2 or 3 hours at the terminal. The booking form proposes the pickup time for you.

How much is a transfer from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt Airport?

The fixed price for the 401 km route is shown in the booking form before you book and never changes afterwards — regardless of traffic, time of day, weekday or how long the drive actually takes. It depends on the vehicle class and the distance, not on a meter.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

The sedan classes take 2 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags; the Business Van takes 7 suitcases plus 5 cabin bags for up to 8 passengers. Declare oversized items such as skis, a golf bag or a pushchair when booking so the right class is dispatched.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur is booked to the minute in Leipzig Hauptbahnhof. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Leipzig Hauptbahnhof.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.

How does free cancellation work?

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the agreed pickup time. After that a cancellation fee may apply; at the pickup address in Leipzig Hauptbahnhof 15 minutes of waiting are included, and each further quarter hour is charged at the rate stated in the terms.
