Old Rixdorf around Richardplatz still shows the Bohemian village founded by religious refugees in the eighteenth century, while Britz holds Bruno Taut's Hufeisensiedlung, part of the UNESCO-listed Berlin Modernism Housing Estates. Further south lie the Britzer Garten and Gropiusstadt.

Tips for the drive

By day the first few kilometres inside Neukölln are the slowest – Karl-Marx-Strasse and Sonnenallee both clog at rush hour. At night that disappears, which makes early departures more predictable here than late-morning ones.

If you are travelling as a group, say so in advance: four people from Neukölln with full luggage are far more comfortable in a van across five and a half hours than in a loaded estate car.
