Lake Titisee is one of Germany's best-known lakes, a glacial basin with a promenade, boat hire and shops selling cuckoo clocks and Black Forest gateau to day visitors. The municipality has around 12,800 residents and belongs to the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.

Neustadt is the working half, with administration, retail and schools, and above the town stands the Hochfirst jump, the largest natural ski jump in Germany. Neighbouring Hinterzarten, Lenzkirch and Breitnau are all a short drive away.
