Bacharach lies about 77 kilometres from Frankfurt Airport, a drive of roughly an hour. The first stretch belongs entirely to the river: the B 9 hugs the left bank past Niederheimbach and Trechtingshausen towards Bingen.

From Bingen the A 60 takes over, skirting Mainz to the south and joining the A 67 and then the A 3 for the final few minutes to the departures level. The motorway section is the predictable part; whether the trip takes 55 or 70 minutes is decided on those first twenty kilometres along the water.

Visitors come for Riesling grown on the steep slate slopes, for the river scenery that Victor Hugo raved about, and for the landing stage used by the Rhine cruise boats.

Tips for this run

Autumn and winter mornings often bring fog to the valley, and overtaking lorries on the B 9 is barely possible. For early departures we therefore build extra time into the pick-up.

On event weekends such as Rhein in Flammen the riverside road is closed in places; mention it when you book and the route is planned around it. If you are travelling home with cases of wine, tell us so the vehicle has the boot space.
