Burg Eltz in the Elzbach valley

Burg Eltz stands on a rock spur in a loop of the Elzbach stream, hidden in a side valley of the Mosel in the Cochem-Zell district. It has belonged to the same family for more than eight hundred years and was never destroyed, so towers, oriels and half-timbered gables from several centuries survive side by side.

It was built as a shared castle for three branches of the family, which explains the unusually dense cluster of buildings; the armoury and the historic living quarters can be visited. The silhouette became familiar far beyond the region from its appearance on the old 500-mark banknote.

Tips for the journey back

Allow for the walk from the castle courtyard back up to the car park before your pick-up time; uphill takes noticeably longer than the way down, and with suitcases the shuttle bus is worth taking.
