From the terminal the car joins the A 3 at the Frankfurter Kreuz and runs some eighty kilometres through the edge of the Taunus and the Westerwald past Limburg an der Lahn and Montabaur. The whole trip is about 140 km and takes roughly 99 minutes.

At the Dernbach interchange the route switches to the A 48 towards Koblenz and Trier, and the final stretch crosses the Maifeld on country roads through Wierschem to the visitor car park above the Elzbach valley.

The first sight of Burg Eltz comes abruptly: the forest path opens out and the towers appear crowded together on their rock above the stream. Because the castle was never taken, its medieval and Renaissance towers, bays and interiors survive intact.

Inside you can see the historic living quarters of the three family branches and the treasury with its gold and silver work. Opening is normally limited to the summer half of the year, so it is worth checking current times before you book.

Wear sturdy shoes: the way from the car park to the castle is a woodland path, not a paved approach.
