The route: Frankfurt Airport to Hattingen

From the airport the A 3 leaves the Frankfurter Kreuz heading north-west: through the Taunus, over Limburg an der Lahn and across the Westerwald towards Bonn. The whole run covers around 242 kilometres in roughly two hours and forty minutes.

Past Cologne the drive switches to the A 1 towards Wuppertal and then to the A 43 in the direction of Bochum. The last leg drops down the L 651 into the Ruhr valley and into Hattingen.

Meet and greet in arrivals

Your driver stands in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 with a name sign. Because the flight is tracked in advance, a late landing simply shifts the meeting time with it.

From the meeting point it is straight to the vehicle with no queue. Arriving in Frankfurt at night, you still reach the Ennepe-Ruhr district the same night rather than waiting for the first train.

Arriving in Hattingen

You are dropped at the address you choose, in the old town or in Welper, Blankenstein, Winz-Baak or Niederwenigern. Hotels, the hospital and company addresses across the borough are served directly.

The same applies to destinations in Sprockhövel, Herzkamp or southern Bochum. Changing onto an S-Bahn and bus in Bochum or Essen becomes unnecessary.

Arriving in the Ruhr valley

Dropping from the plateau into the valley makes it obvious why Hattingen is an exception in the Ruhr: the half-timbered core around St George's church, with its twisted spire, has survived almost intact and feels more like a Bergisch market town than a coalfield city.

A few minutes away the Henrichshütte in Welper tells the other story, its blast furnace the oldest preserved in the region and now part of an industrial museum. Add Blankenstein Castle above the river, the Ruhr valley cycle route and nearby Lake Kemnade.

Tips for this journey

Arriving in the late afternoon puts the stretch between Cologne and Wuppertal into the densest traffic of the day; an earlier landing is noticeably calmer. The A 43 around Bochum can also stall.

Many lanes in the old town are narrow or traffic-calmed, so it helps to name a drop-off within walking distance. For destinations on the slopes towards Blankenstein, an exact street name matters, especially in snow.

Comparison

Transfer, taxi or train from Hattingen?

The train takes you from the airport as far as Bochum or Essen at best, after which an S-Bahn or bus finishes the trip into the Ruhr valley - the least pleasant part of the day with suitcases after a long-haul flight. An airport taxi meters all 242 kilometres, whereas this transfer is a fixed price agreed in advance and the driver waits when your flight is delayed. A rental car only pays off if you genuinely need a car in Hattingen; otherwise you pay for the drop-off and a parking space instead of stepping out at your own front door.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Hattingen take?

The drive from Frankfurt Airport to Hattingen takes about 163 minutes for 242 km in normal traffic. That is measured from the meeting point inside the terminal, not from touchdown.

Where does my driver meet me at Terminal 1 or 3?

The meeting point is the arrivals hall of your terminal — your driver stands just beyond the customs exit holding a name sign and walks you to the vehicle. The terminal follows from the flight number you give when booking, and a diversion to 1 or 3 still gets you found.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickup is linked to your flight number and shifts automatically with the actual landing time — at no extra charge. 60 minutes of waiting are included after touchdown so baggage reclaim and passport control are covered.

How much is a transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Hattingen?

The fixed price for the 242 km route is shown in the booking form before you book and never changes afterwards — regardless of traffic, time of day, weekday or how long the drive actually takes. It depends on the vehicle class and the distance, not on a meter.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

The sedan classes take 2 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags; the Business Van takes 7 suitcases plus 5 cabin bags for up to 8 passengers. Declare oversized items such as skis, a golf bag or a pushchair when booking so the right class is dispatched.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur waits for you at the terminal with a name sign. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Hattingen.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.
