At Memmingen we turn north onto the A7, pass Ulm and Würzburg, and reach the Rhine-Main area on the A3. Only the opening kilometres are mountain road; everything after that is motorway.

Oberstaufen sits at around 800 metres in the Oberallgäu district and remains Germany's only Schroth spa town — the Schroth cure has shaped the place for generations and fills it across the whole season. Between the neighbouring communities of Stiefenhofen, Oberreute, Grünenbach and Weiler-Simmerberg the landscape opens into meadows, moorland and viewpoints that reach as far as Lake Constance.
