Wiesbaden's main station to Frankfurt Airport is about 27 kilometres, and we allow around 24 minutes. From the station square we take the ring road onto the A66 heading east, switch to the A3 at the Wiesbadener Kreuz and stay on it to the airport exit.

The road runs along the southern slope of the Taunus past Wallau and Hofheim, and outside peak hours it is one of the quickest links in the whole Rhine-Main region. Between seven and nine in the morning the A66 does back up leaving town, which is what the buffer is for.

The main station itself is a neo-baroque terminus of 1906 in red sandstone, one of the handsomest railway buildings in Germany. Above the town, the Neroberg – reached by the historic Nerobergbahn funicular – looks out over the rooftops towards the Rhine, and the Rheingau wine country begins just west at Walluf and Eltville.

Tips for the run to Frankfurt

When a major fair is on in Frankfurt, the A3 between the Wiesbadener Kreuz and the Frankfurter Kreuz turns sticky, so a 30-minute head start is well spent. Friday afternoons during the summer holidays are especially unpredictable.
