The route from Burg Rheinfels to Frankfurt Airport

From Burg Rheinfels above Sankt Goar to Frankfurt Airport is 104 kilometres and about 72 minutes. The drive begins on the narrow Schlossberg road down to the town, then climbs out of the Rhine gorge onto the Hunsrück plateau to reach the A 61.

From Bingen the A 60 and A 3 carry on eastwards, with the final kilometres running right along the airport perimeter. Only the first ten minutes are slow; after that the journey is easy to predict.

Pickup at the castle

The meeting point is the access road on the Schlossberg below the castle complex, or the hotel at the castle itself if you stayed there. Alternatively we collect you down in Sankt Goar.

The approach is narrow and steep, and larger vehicles need more room to turn. That is why we always allow a few extra minutes for a pickup at the castle.

Arriving at your departure terminal

We take you to the departures kerb of Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, depending on the airline. Put that detail in the booking and you avoid the shuttle between terminals.

Allow three hours before a long-haul departure and two for European flights. The drive itself is calm once the motorway begins, but the descent from the castle counts towards the total.

Burg Rheinfels above the Rhine

Burg Rheinfels was begun in 1245 by the counts of Katzenelnbogen and grew into the largest fortress on the Middle Rhine. It withstood a long siege by the Rhenish towns, held out against French troops in 1692 and was finally blown up in 1797.

What remains is the valley's biggest castle ruin, with extensive grounds, a museum and the celebrated underground mine tunnels you can walk through with a torch. From the walls the view runs across Sankt Goar to Katz Castle and the bend of the river before the Loreley.

Travel tips for this route

The castle grounds are large, uneven and in places unsurfaced. If you are heading straight to the airport after a visit, it is better to leave the luggage in the car or at your hotel beforehand.

In winter the Schlossberg road can be demanding in snow or ice, and the Hunsrück plateau often still has snow when the valley floor has none. For early flights we bring the departure forward accordingly.

Comparison

Transfer, taxi or train from Burg Rheinfels?

Public transport from the castle is awkward: first down into Sankt Goar, then a regional train on the left-bank Rhine line to Mainz, then the S-Bahn to the airport, two changes plus a walk, all with luggage. A taxi has to be ordered ahead in Sankt Goar, and over 104 kilometres the meter stays unpredictable. A rental car means hairpins with cases in the boot and airport parking charges at the end. The fixed-price transfer drives up to the castle approach, takes you to the terminal kerb without a change and is finally costed the moment you book.

Timing

When to set off from Burg Rheinfels

For the 104 km to Frankfurt your driver allows around 72 minutes of actual driving plus roughly 15 minutes of buffer for rush hour, roadworks and the terminal approach. To make a Schengen flight, that means leaving Burg Rheinfels about 3 h 27 min before departure; for long-haul and non-Schengen, about 4 h 27 min.

You do not have to do that arithmetic yourself. Enter your departure time and address and the booking form proposes the pickup time — driving time, buffer and terminal lead are already inside it. If you would rather leave earlier, overwrite the suggestion.

In the other direction the arithmetic disappears anyway: for an airport pickup the time hangs on your flight number, not the clock. Your driver tracks the actual landing, and 60 minutes of waiting from touchdown are included.

What's included

What the price covers on this route

The fixed price for Burg Rheinfels – Frankfurt Airport covers all 104 km, plus tolls and road charges en route, the airport access and short-stay parking at pickup. What you pay is settled before you book — there is no meter and no surcharge that only appears as you get out.

The price is independent of the clock as well. The same route costs the same at three in the morning as on a Wednesday afternoon, the same on public holidays as on working days, and there is no demand surcharge during trade fairs. The only things that move it are ones you choose: a stop along the way, a larger vehicle class, or the return leg.

Every passenger is welcome — regardless of background, gender, identity or orientation; our drivers are explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly. Pets travel when the species and size are noted at booking, and guide and assistance dogs with no notice and no surcharge.

How much is a transfer from Burg Rheinfels to Frankfurt Airport?

The fixed price for the 104 km route is shown in the booking form before you book and never changes afterwards — regardless of traffic, time of day, weekday or how long the drive actually takes. It depends on the vehicle class and the distance, not on a meter.

What does the fixed price include?

It covers the 104 km drive, tolls and road charges en route, airport fees, and 15 minutes of waiting at the pickup address in Burg Rheinfels. The price only moves for things you choose yourself — a stop along the way, a larger vehicle class or a return leg — and each is shown in the form before you confirm.

Does the ride cost more at night or on public holidays?

The fixed price applies whatever the clock says: Burg Rheinfels – Frankfurt Airport costs the same at three in the morning as on a Wednesday afternoon. There is no night, weekend or holiday surcharge, and no demand pricing during trade fairs. Booking and driving run 24/7.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

The sedan classes take 4 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags; the Business Van takes 12 suitcases plus 5 cabin bags for up to 8 passengers. Declare oversized items such as skis, a golf bag or a pushchair when booking so the right class is dispatched.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur is booked to the minute in Burg Rheinfels. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Burg Rheinfels.

Transfer or train from Burg Rheinfels?

The train is cheaper per person, the transfer per vehicle — with two travellers and luggage the comparison usually flips. The transfer covers the 104 km in about 72 minutes with no changes and ends at your address rather than a station; travelling alone with hand luggage and a good connection, the train is often the better call.

Can I travel with a dog or a cat?

Pets are welcome. State the species and size when booking so the right vehicle class is dispatched for Burg Rheinfels — small animals travel in a carrier in the footwell, larger dogs in the load area of a van. Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel in every vehicle, with no advance notice and no surcharge.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.

Can I book this transfer for someone else?

The booking runs in the passenger's name rather than the payer's — your guest, client or family member is collected at the given address in Burg Rheinfels. Payment and the receipt stay with you. Add the passenger's flight number and mobile so flight tracking and contact both work.

Who is the service for?

Every passenger is welcome — regardless of background, gender, identity or orientation. Our drivers are explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly: couples, families of every shape, women travelling alone and guests who need assistance are driven with exactly the same matter-of-factness as anyone else. Discretion is part of a chauffeur service in any case.

How does free cancellation work?

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the agreed pickup time. After that a cancellation fee may apply; at the pickup address in Burg Rheinfels 15 minutes of waiting are included, and each further quarter hour is charged at the rate stated in the terms.
