The drive from the terminal to Burg Rheinfels covers 104 kilometres in roughly 72 minutes. It runs west on the A 3, crosses the Rhine at Bingen and follows the A 61 over the Hunsrück.

Just before Sankt Goar it winds down into the valley and then climbs the Schlossberg road back up to the castle. Looking across the town, the ruin is recognisable from far off as a long line of wall along the hillside.

Rheinfels was once the most powerful stronghold on the Middle Rhine. The counts of Katzenelnbogen began building in 1245, the fortress survived a siege by the Rhenish towns that lasted more than a year, and it was only destroyed by explosives in 1797.

Today it is the largest castle ruin in the valley: broad courtyards, casemates and a network of underground mine tunnels that visitors explore by torchlight. From the viewpoints you look over Sankt Goar to Katz Castle and downstream towards the Loreley.

Sturdy shoes are essential on the site, and the tunnels are low, damp and dark, so pack a torch in your hand luggage. Large suitcases are better left in the car or at a hotel down in the town.
