About the Drachenfels

The Drachenfels rises directly above Königswinter on the right bank of the Rhine and carries the ruin of a castle built by the Archbishop of Cologne in the 12th century. The name comes from the Nibelung legend in which Siegfried killed the dragon here, commemorated by the Nibelungenhalle on the slope. The rack railway has climbed the hill since 1883, making it the oldest still operating in Germany, and the neo-Gothic Schloss Drachenburg stands halfway up.

Tips for the journey back

On fine weekends the approach roads and car parks below the hill fill up, and a pre-agreed pickup at the valley station is far more reliable than looking for a passing taxi. Allow for the rack railway's descent time in your planning.

The A 3 between the Siebengebirge and Limburg carries heavy freight and frequent roadworks, which is why buffer is already built into the schedule. For very early flights, a night in Königswinter beats a pre-dawn start from the hillside.
