Frankfurt Airport to the Drachenfels is around 145 kilometres and about 95 minutes of driving. From the Frankfurter Kreuz the A 3 takes you north-west, past Limburg an der Lahn and across the Westerwald.

Just before Bonn the wooded domes of the Siebengebirge appear. We leave the motorway for Königswinter and drop down to the riverbank, because the last climb to the summit belongs to the rack railway.

About the Drachenfels

The Drachenfels is the best-known hill of the Siebengebirge and one of the most visited viewpoints on the Rhine: from the castle ruin above Königswinter the view runs downstream towards Bonn and the Cologne lowlands.

The castle was founded by the Archbishop of Cologne in the 12th century, and the hill's trachyte went into Cologne Cathedral. On the slope stand the dragon-themed Nibelungenhalle and the neo-Gothic Schloss Drachenburg, and the rack railway that has run since 1883 is the oldest still working in Germany.

Practical notes

No car reaches the summit, so add the rack railway ride or the walk up to your timings. The railway's operating hours change with the season, which matters most for late arrivals.

On sunny weekends Königswinter is busy and the riverside road slow; a mid-morning or later-afternoon arrival runs more smoothly. When the Rhine is high, bank-side access roads can close at short notice.
