Frankfurt Airport to Hohenschwangau at the foot of the castle is 421 kilometres and takes around 4 hours 20 minutes. The A3 runs through the Spessart to Würzburg, then the A7 heads south past Ulm, Memmingen and Kempten.

The A7 ends at Füssen, and from there the B17 — the Romantic Road — covers the final kilometres to Hohenschwangau. On this last stretch the Ammergau Alps appear, and eventually the castle towers themselves.

About Neuschwanstein Castle

Ludwig II began building Neuschwanstein in 1869 above the Pöllat gorge, within sight of his parents' Hohenschwangau Castle. The classic view of the towers opens from the Marienbrücke, suspended high across the ravine.

The surroundings include Schwangau with the church of St Coloman standing alone in the meadows, the Alpsee and Schwansee, Füssen with its High Castle, and the Forggensee near Rieden. A few kilometres south, Austrian territory begins at Breitenwang.
