The route: Frankfurt Airport to Neuschwanstein Castle

Frankfurt Airport to Hohenschwangau at the foot of the castle is 421 kilometres and takes around 4 hours 20 minutes. The A3 runs through the Spessart to Würzburg, then the A7 heads south past Ulm, Memmingen and Kempten.

The A7 ends at Füssen, and from there the B17 — the Romantic Road — covers the final kilometres to Hohenschwangau. On this last stretch the Ammergau Alps appear, and eventually the castle towers themselves.

Meet and greet at Frankfurt Airport

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign until you are through with your luggage. The flight number is tracked, so the meeting time shifts automatically if you land late.

Many guests arrive on intercontinental flights and want to head straight for the Königswinkel. Four hours in a car is a far gentler way to cover that than a chain of connections.

Arriving in Hohenschwangau

We take you into Hohenschwangau: to the ticket centre on Alpseestraße, your hotel in the village, or the car park you nominate. No public road leads up to the castle itself — the final climb is on foot, by shuttle bus or by horse-drawn carriage.

If your tour is booked for the following day, we normally drop you at your accommodation in Schwangau or Füssen instead. That is part of the same journey.

About Neuschwanstein Castle

Ludwig II began building Neuschwanstein in 1869 above the Pöllat gorge, within sight of his parents' Hohenschwangau Castle. The classic view of the towers opens from the Marienbrücke, suspended high across the ravine.

The surroundings include Schwangau with the church of St Coloman standing alone in the meadows, the Alpsee and Schwansee, Füssen with its High Castle, and the Forggensee near Rieden. A few kilometres south, Austrian territory begins at Breitenwang.

Practical notes for this transfer

Castle tour tickets are timed and must be reserved in advance, so leave enough time between arriving in Hohenschwangau and the start of your slot for the climb up.

In peak season the village road and the car parks fill up in the afternoon. A morning or early-evening arrival is calmer — and the fixed price stays the same regardless.

Transfer, taxi or train from Neuschwanstein Castle?

By rail from Frankfurt you first reach Munich or Augsburg, then Füssen, and a local bus completes the trip to Hohenschwangau — two or three changes tied to fixed timetables. A metered taxi over 421 kilometres keeps the total open until you arrive. A rental car means driving yourself after the flight and then hunting for one of the sought-after parking spaces in Hohenschwangau. The fixed-price transfer starts with a name sign in arrivals and ends directly below the castle.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Neuschwanstein Castle take?

The drive from Frankfurt Airport to Neuschwanstein Castle takes about 261 minutes for 421 km in normal traffic. That is measured from the meeting point inside the terminal, not from touchdown.

Where does my driver meet me at Terminal 1 or 3?

The meeting point is the arrivals hall of your terminal — your driver stands just beyond the customs exit holding a name sign and walks you to the vehicle. The terminal follows from the flight number you give when booking, and a diversion to 1 or 3 still gets you found.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickup is linked to your flight number and shifts automatically with the actual landing time — at no extra charge. 60 minutes of waiting are included after touchdown so baggage reclaim and passport control are covered.

How much is a transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Neuschwanstein Castle?

The fixed price for the 421 km route is shown in the booking form before you book and never changes afterwards — regardless of traffic, time of day, weekday or how long the drive actually takes. It depends on the vehicle class and the distance, not on a meter.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

The sedan classes take 2 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags; the Business Van takes 7 suitcases plus 5 cabin bags for up to 8 passengers. Declare oversized items such as skis, a golf bag or a pushchair when booking so the right class is dispatched.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur waits for you at the terminal with a name sign. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Neuschwanstein Castle.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.
