Stolzenfels is not a knights' castle but a romantic 19th-century summer palace: from 1836 Prussia's Crown Prince Frederick William IV rebuilt the ruined medieval toll castle in neo-Gothic style, with Karl Friedrich Schinkel involved and grounds designed by Peter Joseph Lenné.

Its perch on a spur south of Koblenz opens views to the mouth of the Lahn at Lahnstein and across to Marksburg. For many visitors this is where the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley begins, running upstream from Koblenz all the way to Bingen.

Tips for your arrival

Check the castle's opening times before fixing your arrival – Stolzenfels closes on certain days and over the winter, and the climb is only worth it if the gates are open.
