Stolzenfels Castle lies roughly 113 kilometres from Frankfurt Airport, about 77 minutes by road. From the castle hill the car descends to the B 9, the river road that runs north along the left bank of the Rhine into Koblenz.

From Koblenz the A 48 climbs out of the valley and, at the Dernbach interchange, the A 3 takes over towards Frankfurt across the Westerwald and past Limburg an der Lahn. The switch from a tight wooded river gorge to open motorway sets the rhythm of the whole journey.

About Stolzenfels Castle

Stolzenfels is the textbook example of Prussian Rhine Romanticism: from 1836 Crown Prince Frederick William IV had a neo-Gothic palace raised on the ruins of a medieval toll castle, with Karl Friedrich Schinkel involved in the design and grounds laid out by Peter Joseph Lenné.

It stands on a wooded spur south of Koblenz, facing the mouth of the Lahn at Lahnstein and within sight of Marksburg above Braubach. The site belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and Queen Victoria was received here in the 19th century.

Practical notes

The walk up from the car park takes about fifteen minutes and is steep – build that in if you plan a last look at the castle on your departure day.

The B 9 along the Rhine is a trunk road with village sections and speed limits: scenic, but not fast, and our 77-minute estimate already reflects that. During winter high water the riverside road can be affected, in which case we route over the heights via Waldesch.
