From the Nürburgring to Frankfurt Airport

The Nürburgring lies around 162 kilometres from Frankfurt Airport, a drive of roughly one hour and 50 minutes. Winding Eifel roads lead first towards Kelberg and the A 48, then past Koblenz onto the A 3.

The A 3 runs via Montabaur, Limburg an der Lahn and the Taunus straight to the airport with no further motorway change. After a weekend on the Nordschleife it is comfortably the calmest part of the day.

Pickup at the Ring

You are collected wherever you say: at the paddock, on Otto-Flimm-Straße, at a hotel in Nürburg or Meuspath, at an apartment in Adenau, or right at the campsite. During events the rule is simple, the more precise your gate or zone, the closer the driver can get.

The fare is fixed at booking, no matter how long it takes to clear the site on a Sunday afternoon.

Arriving at the departure terminal

At the far end the car turns off the A 3 onto the terminal approach and stops on the departures level at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, according to your airline.

The Nürburgring in the Eifel

Built into the high Eifel in the 1920s, the Ring today consists of the Nordschleife, more than twenty kilometres long with well over seventy corners, alongside the modern Grand Prix circuit. Jackie Stewart's nickname, the Green Hell, has stuck to the Nordschleife ever since.

Tips for the departure

After major events the Eifel roads are saturated for several hours as tens of thousands of vehicles leave at once. On those days we deliberately bring the pickup forward rather than hoping for a clear run.

If several people are travelling with equipment, take the van rather than the saloon; tyres, tools and cases need more room than the airline allowance implies. For long-haul departures we plan around three hours of buffer at the terminal.

Leaving the Ring by public transport means a bus along country roads, a change down in the valley and at least one further connection to the airport, which is a miserable exercise with tools or a helmet. A taxi for 162 kilometres is rarely available at short notice in the Eifel and charges by time, precisely when the exit traffic is crawling. A rental car still has to be refuelled and returned to a multi-storey car park after a race weekend.
