Route facts

From Frankfurt Airport to Passau

It is about 446 kilometres from the terminal to Passau, roughly four and a half hours on the road. The A 3 carries almost the whole distance: past Würzburg, Nuremberg and Regensburg down into Lower Bavaria, finally skirting Vilshofen an der Donau.

Shortly before the end the Danube valley opens up and the city appears on its narrow peninsula between the rivers. A run without changes is particularly welcome when a river cruise ship casts off the next morning.

Landing and meeting your driver

Your driver waits with a name sign in the arrivals hall of your terminal, with the flight number monitored. If the landing slips, the meeting point moves with it — night arrivals included.

The driver takes the cases and walks you to the vehicle. Arriving from overseas and hoping to be in Passau the same evening, you avoid hunting for a workable train connection.

Arriving in Passau

We set you down where you actually need to be: your old-town hotel, the berth of your river cruise ship on the Danube quay, the university, or a private address in Salzweg, Thyrnau or Neuburg am Inn.

The old-town lanes are narrow and partly closed to through traffic; the driver knows which approaches are permitted and stops as close to the entrance as the rules allow. For cruise guests the gangway is the usual destination.

Experiencing Passau

Passau is the city where the Inn, the Ilz and the Danube meet — at the Dreiflusseck the colour difference between the three rivers is visible to the naked eye. After the great fire, Italian master builders rebuilt the baroque old town, which still feels more southern than the rest of Bavaria.

St Stephen's Cathedral holds one of the largest church organ installations in the world, the Veste Oberhaus fortress watches over the Danube, and the quay is where both Vienna- and Budapest-bound river cruises and Danube cycle-path riders set off. With around 53,000 residents, the city nevertheless stays walkable.

Good to know

If your cruise starts the following day, an old-town hotel and an evening-before arrival are worth it — time in hand after a transatlantic flight is rarely wasted. Give the ship's name and berth at booking if you are going straight aboard.

A break en route, usually around Würzburg or Nuremberg, is planned in and does not alter the fixed price. Neither do delays on the A 3.

Comparison

Transfer, taxi or train from Passau?

The rail option from the airport to Passau means the long-distance station first, then an ICE towards Nuremberg and another train down into Lower Bavaria — heavy going with large cases after a long-haul flight, especially as late connections thin out. A metered taxi over this distance only names its figure at the destination. A rental car brings a counter queue, a night drive on the A 3 and a parking problem in an old town of narrow lanes. The fixed-price transfer begins with the name sign at Frankfurt and ends at your hotel or directly at the gangway on the Danube: no changes, and a price you knew in advance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Passau take?

The drive from Frankfurt Airport to Passau takes about 271 minutes for 446 km in normal traffic. That is measured from the meeting point inside the terminal, not from touchdown.

Where does my driver meet me at Terminal 1 or 3?

The meeting point is the arrivals hall of your terminal — your driver stands just beyond the customs exit holding a name sign and walks you to the vehicle. The terminal follows from the flight number you give when booking, and a diversion to 1 or 3 still gets you found.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickup is linked to your flight number and shifts automatically with the actual landing time — at no extra charge. 60 minutes of waiting are included after touchdown so baggage reclaim and passport control are covered.

How much is a transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Passau?

The fixed price for the 446 km route is shown in the booking form before you book and never changes afterwards — regardless of traffic, time of day, weekday or how long the drive actually takes. It depends on the vehicle class and the distance, not on a meter.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

The sedan classes take 2 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags; the Business Van takes 7 suitcases plus 5 cabin bags for up to 8 passengers. Declare oversized items such as skis, a golf bag or a pushchair when booking so the right class is dispatched.

Is this a taxi or a chauffeur service?

This is a chauffeur service: the journey is booked in advance, the price is fixed before you book and no meter runs. Your driver wears a suit, greets you by name and helps with the luggage — in the Business and First Class categories it is a limousine service with a Mercedes E- or S-Class. You hail a taxi at a rank; a chauffeur waits for you at the terminal with a name sign. That makes the transfer the fixed-price alternative to a Frankfurt Airport taxi for Passau.

Can I pay the driver by card?

Card payment is accepted directly in the vehicle — as is cash or paying online in advance, and business customers can be invoiced. You receive a receipt with VAT shown either way.

Can I travel with an infant or child seat?

A child seat, booster or infant carrier is selected during booking and fitted by the driver before pickup. State the child's age so the correct size group is installed.
