Frankfurt Airport to the Wartburg is around 208 kilometres, a drive of roughly two hours and twenty minutes. The A 5 heads north past Gießen, Alsfeld and Bad Hersfeld before a short stretch of A 7 at the Hattenbach interchange feeds onto the A 4.

The A 4 runs east to Eisenach, and from there a narrow road climbs the castle hill. That final section is winding and easily the most scenic part of the journey.
